Grassroots Outreach is an independent, non-profit organisation established to provide relief, rehabilitation, and empowerment to communities that suffer from poverty, inequality and social-economic exclusion.
We are non-political and non-sectarian but are involved in rehabilitation and empowerment programs that help those trapped in unbearable living conditions in communities worldwide.
Grassroots Outreach as an international charity is based in the United Kingdom and aims to identify communities in fragile settings that suffer most from poverty. We interact directly with these community to fashion out programs that address the root causes of their plight. We also know that poverty and deprivation can be present anywhere but that it can be more pervasive and evident in some communities and nations than others.
In the developed countries poverty exists in the inner cities and suburbs comprised mostly of immigrants while in the developing nations and particularly in Africa poverty is visibly extensive. For this reason, Africa attracts the main focus and Grassroots Outreach has extensive community-based activities in Nigeria where it operates as a non-governmental organisation. Although we strive to address the root causes of poverty and inequality everywhere, Africa has remained uppermost in our concern due to the dire situation in the continent.
The United Nations in a recent report on sustainable development noted that nearly half the global population live in poverty, including a substantial percentage of children with an alarming number out of this living in extreme poverty. This makes poverty a formidable global challenge that demands urgent attention especially when we consider its negative impact on lives. Communities hit by poverty are deprived of basic needs like food, shelter, education, health services, access to water and other amenities that make life meaningful.
Inequality, deprivation and other issues that affect the general well-being and quality of life are all linked with poverty. The rich nations are not spared the pains of poverty as there are also poor and deprived people who have taken knocks from the economic system and live in deplorable conditions.
As these deplorable conditions prevail in communities, we have a general duty of care because we are all connected in the global space and are as strong as the weakest link. A deplorable condition in a part of the world inadventedly negates any improved conditions in another and thus becomes a cog in our overall advancement.
Grassroots Outreach understands this clearly and sets out to address these factors that drive poverty, inequality and social-economic exclusion right from the grassroots where they fester.
We strive to identify communities ravaged by poverty, deprivation, economic exclusion and inequality, then sensitise these problems and create awareness, strategize an action plan and solicit for assistance by mobilising funds to address the issues while liaising with members of these communities on suitable solutions.
Our mission is to call out and address those factors that make poverty, inequality and economic exclusion to thrive in societies by initiating and delivering programs that help and uplift citizens. These we achieve through:
a) Enlightenment campaigns-creating awareness and providing self-help tips
b) Education and vocational trainings-providing facilities/resource materials, assisting in apprenticeships, employment workshops and job placements.
c) Health services—rehabilitation, mobile clinics, immunisation- to guarantee healthy and productive communities,
d) Social amenities—portable water and electricity to make rural communities conducive.
e) Empowerment packages– for the most vulnerable and relief assistance during emergencies.
Grassroots Outreach work directly with the local communities where they operate. This strategy enables us to interact directly with the people affected by these problems and oblige them to fashion out the most suitable solutions to their problems.
Our programs in the developed nations are focused on poverty in the inner cities where inequality and deprivation usually exist. Support in this regard comes through enlightenment campaigns and vocational workshops that teaches self-development and citizens responsibility.
Importantly, Grassroots Outreach aims to be proactive, and by this, we strive to extirpate issues before they become overwhelming. For example, the rural to urban migration and the brain drain affecting African nations have become an issue of utmost concern.
One of the factors recognised as driving this problem is the lack of opportunities and unbearable conditions in rural communities. To address the depletion of rural communities of their much-needed citizens, Grassroots Outreach initiates programs that make chosen communities more habitable and liveable, with social amenities and empowerment initiatives.
Africa no doubt needs its educated and trained professionals for its development but faces a drastic loss of its workforce to the already developed nations. Grassroots Outreach has a program that sensitizes this issue, which not only creates awareness but goes further to directly address those factors that fuel human trafficking. We also assist those in the diaspora wishing to relocate to Africa and rehabilitate those deported back to Africa by the developed countries.
